Personalised Vows

These are vows from past couples who wanted to share with you what they said to their partner on their wedding day.

Use them freely as inspiration for your own vows.

​There are a LOT of examples for you to pick and mix from! 

Say as much or as little as you like, but notice in BOLD that the minimum legal requirement to say is:

"I call upon the persons here present to witness that I, ANNA BELINDA CARLTON, take you, DANIEL EDWARD FISHER, to be my lawful wedded husband/wife/spouse."

Basic Structure

Your vows are first and foremost promises, to be kept and upheld throughout your years together. 

To write vows, you need 2 things:
CONTEXT - your past and history together. 
PROMISES - your outlook and future together. 

So write down and copy these 3 sections out:

1. What I love about you, and our life together (CONTEXT, general)
"I love that you..."

2. Why we make a good team (CONTEXT, specifics)
"I love that we..."

3. What I promise to do for you and our marriage (VOWS)
"I promise to..."

We’re 2 crazy people, and for 4 exciting years we have been a crazy, perfect couple.

Yes, I know that most of the time it was you that made peace first. Of all the things you did to win me over, the way you daily showed your affection was by far the most persuasive. I was far from being accustomed to being told everyday that I was beautiful or special. Actually it was multiple times a day! And four years on, you still shower me with hugs and kisses and kind words, and you’ve turned me into the same kind of warm, gooey person.

Babe, you and I both know how indecisive I can be at times.

As I look around today at all our families and friends, I know that I stand here without any uncertainty or reservations. I can that say this with confidence because over the last 10 years, as we've grown up from immature teenagers to slightly less immature adults, I realise every day how lucky I am to share my life with you.

Our relationship hasn't been without its challenges, without ups and downs. However through perseverance, communication and a pinch of stubbornness, we’ve pushed through all those things to be where we are today, standing here together. 

We'll always have things in common, like eating, eating and eating. In saying that, I'll be the first to admit that neither of us are perfect. However we can look past all of these flaws… because as with any relationship, I've brought some flaws of my own…

I can be very pedantic about certain things; I'm terrible with house work but in contrast, supremely good at being disorganised with life in general.

Despite this, you’ve always been there for me, whether it was through my failed attempt at higher education, through many tough and long days in the office or through my fledgling Squash career, I've been fortunate to be able to count on your unwavering support.

I use words like fortunate and lucky because that's the way I feel every day we're together. This will be the one and only time you'll hear me say this in public or ever, so remember my words clearly.

Wow. That was how I felt when I first saw you on our first date sometime in early 2016 at a Burmese and Thai Restaurant. I had a slow motion moment when you took that corner in your Subaru Impreza and I caught a glimpse of your surprising look on your face. Your eyes expanded and lips pouting. But you know, the way you took that corner, was the way we had our date. I cornered you to our important points in life and took it from there.

It has only been a year and some months. Some may ask, “are you sure?” and I say life’s too short. You’ve ticked most of my boxes, we’ll work out the exercise issue later... And just spending time with you ensured me that you are low risk but you definitely give more than just great returns, you pour your heart out for me, and it always brings a tear, or two, to my eyes.

I promise you that I will always be loyal and open to you, be by your side as much possible. Because life is unpredictable, I can only wish that we would spend the rest of our lives together and promise that I will do less silly and dangerous activities.

It took only 12 years for us to finally reach this day... 
I still vividly remember some of our early encounters when we were 13-14, and the quiet cute little adolescent boy in the pink polo shirt was standing there waiting for me and Tammy in front of Bread Top Springvale. Frankly, I didn't know you existed until I saw you that day at a friend's birthday dinner. 
As we were about to head off to Hoa Tran, our only exchange was a simple 'Hi." But throughout the evening I remember stealing a few glances at you wondering why you weren't wearing TB Babe tops like the rest of us cool kids were... you don't know this but this was all happening while I was trying to get over my first break-up who also happened to be there... little did I know that the guy I was going to marry was just sitting across from the Asian noodles and stir fries. After acknowledging your existence over some new age flirting on MSN Messenger, I'm glad we made it official. 
A lot has happened since then. We grew up together and essentially have become the same person, and ever since we haven't ben able to stop spending every ounce of free time we have together. I think we will be co-dependent for life - I hope that's okay with you. 
Thank you for giving me credit even when I haven't earned it. For example, all the times you've cooked most meals but still praise me for my salad dressing. But hey, someone has to be the good sous chef right? Thank you for always letting me be selfish by allowing me to make all the decisions. 
For example, letting me choose all the house decor, setting aside preferences of your own (Let's be honest though, I mostly always make the right decisions). Thank you for tolerating my Chidi moments of indecision, and for taking me to my 2nd home - Chadstone - every week, to make exchanges or returns as a result of this incessant inability to be satisfied with my purchases. 
So, why do I love you? 
I love you because you think your ankles can tell whether or not it will rain. I love that you think your puns or jokes are clever, including those on the bombonieres our poor guests will be receiving today; I also love that you believe your painstakingly long stories are interesting when in reality they don't get to the point quick enough. I love that you want to smoke everything and anything including ice cream, I love how creative you think your ideas are when they're actually just unrealistically ambitious. 
But despite all your outrageousness,  I am appreciative that you are rarely outraged with me and my flaws. The only times I have to experience your rage is serious road rage and your hanger, which can be quite brutal sometimes. I admire your dedication to your life long passion of helping people, and your humble nature. I am so incredibly lucky to have someone so understanding in my life, who will not only empathise with my feeling but make the effort to change, compromise, and make sacrifices so that I can be happier. I still can't believe you were willing to drive us back to Melbourne after just arriving at Camperdown ready to begin your week just because I forgot to bring my art supplies down. Unlike me, you're an amazing listener, you are patient enough to hear me complain and whinge repetitively and across numerous days, without taking it personally. Thank you for doing so much for me, cooking me delicious meals ready as soon as I get back from work, and then insisting to clean afterwards too. You do all of this and more even when you have your hands full; I can't believe I was able to find you so quickly and easily. I know I am blessed because I have you. 
I promise to give you less silent treatments, I promise to share my troubles with you more, and spoil you as much as you spoil me. It's funny, even though we've spent what feels like a lifetime together, I still feel like I have so much to learn from you; to be more generous, compassionate and more affectionate towards others. I also promise to listen more attentively to your boring stories.

​You look amazing today! It is so surreal seeing you standing here 5 years after we met in the exact same spot. I remember that moment exactly, you were there and I was here and it was pretty dark and it is crazy to think about how many adventures we have been on since then. You are the most supportive and caring person. Thanks again for moving to Sydney. Jono, I love you so much words cannot express how thankful I am for this journey we have shared. Leading up to the wedding, we were constantly checking the weather and thinking about how ridiculously hot it would be, and hoping it would cool down. But this morning, I just felt thankful. 
This 40 degree day reminded me of our first ays where you would ride your bike, in this very same heat just to see me. It reminded me of just how far we have come from uni kids eating tuna on toast and watching Disney marathons, to now trying to be adults and still watching cartoons.

When I first met you, 13 years ago I didn’t think we’d meet again and I had no idea that you would be the one I end up sharing my life with.

You have become my best friend and has never left my side through the ups and downs. For the most part the good outweighed the bad. By a lot. 

You’re funny, gorgeous and generous. You have a forgiving heart and for that I promise to choose to love you in moments when we struggle to like each other, give my best and not my leftovers and if I ever make a mistake, humbly seek forgiveness.
